Event overview

The California Showcase is a FREE, one-day, nonprofit event founded by Coach Terry Donahue (Head Coach, UCLA 1976 – 1995 and winningest coach in the Pac 12 and UCLA history) in association with the National Football Foundation. Graduating high school seniors and second year community college student-athletes have an opportunity to display their skills to NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA football programs in a one-day skills combine. The CA Showcase was something Coach Donahue was extremely proud of and was thrilled to have helped put over 1,000 student-athletes on the path toward a college degree. The CA Showcase Board and the National Football Foundation are honored to carry on Coach Donahue’s beloved tradition and, in doing so, keep his legacy alive.

The 9th Annual Terry Donahue Memorial CA Showcase will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California (Sand Canyon & 5 Fwy). The event will feature student-athletes from all over California and bring together NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA college/universities from across the country, as well as California community college programs. Players will showcase their skills during a series of tests and drills that will best display each player’s talent at their respective positions. The CA Showcase will be organized and managed by former college and professional football players and coaches associated with Coach Donahue throughout his career.

Following the activities, players and coaches from the colleges/universities will meet in an adjacent facility to discuss scholarship and financial aid opportunities. Admission in this area will be restricted to student-athletes, participating coaches and volunteers, visiting high school and college/university coaches and/or administrators, and the media.

  • 8:00 am   — Athlete Registration
  • 9:00 am   — Warm-up
  • 9:30 am   — Testing: height, weight, 40 yard dash and broad jump
  • 10:30 am — Fundamentals – Position specific drills
  • 11:10 am — 7 on 7
  • 12:30 pm — College Fair

How it works

Student athletes from across California will register online prior to the Showcase. They must be a graduating high school senior or a second year Community College student-athlete and have not accepted a scholarship offer from a Division I football program.

All Division II, III, and NAIA athletic directors and head football coaches are invited to attend. There will be ample time for coaches to view the athletes in drills and to talk to them individually about their respective football programs. Staff from the admissions and financial aid departments are encouraged to attend as well.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA. — Kurt Warner, a two-time NFL Most Valuable Player and a Super Bowl champion, will be the featured guest speaker at the annual Lott IMPACT® Trophy Watch List Luncheon Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at The Pacific Club in Newport Beach, CA.

Nominees for the 2021 Lott IMPACT Trophy, an award given to the college football defensive player who makes the biggest IMPACT on their team both on and off the field, will be announced at the luncheon.

Few men exemplify those character traits more than Warner, who wrote himself into history as the only undrafted quarterback to lead his team, the 1999 St. Louis Rams, to a Super Bowl victory. He took the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl a few years later.

He is the only undrafted NFL player in history to be named both league MVP and Super Bowl MVP, and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

His gridiron accomplishments pale in comparison to the dedication he devotes to the community. In 2001, Kurt and his wife Brenda established the First Things First Foundation, a non-profit public charity dedicated to impacting lives by promoting Christian values, sharing experiences, and providing opportunities to encourage everyone that all things are possible when people seek to put first things first. Some of Warner’s more recent accolades for his philanthropy include the 2008 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, the 2008 Good Guy Award from the Pro Football Writers Association, USA WEEKEND’s Most Caring Athlete 2009, and the 2010 Bart Starr Award.

Event Opportunities:
For Event Sponsorship opportunities, dine with Kurt Warner at his table during the luncheon, and information on tickets to the luncheon, priced at $100/ticket and $1,000/table, contact Karen Ringer at KRinger@thelotttrophy.com

Well, USC won again this past weekend.  Beat their rivals from UCLA.  That’s five straight for the Trojans.  They’re still undefeated.

None of that is normally newsworthy, of course, But THIS IS.  They moved UP to No. 13 in the national rankings.  13th!  An undefeated Trojan football team.  Five spots behind a two-loss Iowa State team!!

What’s going on?  This is USC, winners of 11 national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners, legendary coaches and iconic players.  They play their home games in the historic and magnificent two-time Olympic hosting Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

They play in LA, not Tuscaloosa or South Bend.  Or Clemson.  How many people even know what state Clemson is in?

This is the school of Marcus Allen and Reggie Bush, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, Frank Gifford and Junior Seau.  And yes, of Ronnie Lott, arguably the best defensive back in the history of the game.

Well, at least the Trojans potentially have a new Ronnie Lott in versatile, talented Talanoa Hufanga.

A junior from Corvallis, Oregon, Hufanga delivered a spectacular performance Sunday in USC’s wild win over UCLA.  Hufanga recorded an amazing 17 tackles, two for losses, recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass.

A semi-finalist for the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, which has never been won by a Trojan in the first 16 years of the award, Hufanga is listed as a strong safety, but like Lott, he plays all over the field.

Says Trojan Coach Clay Helton: “He’s one of the smartest players I’ve ever had the opportunity to coach and he’s so football instinctive.  He’s such a great playmaker.”

To make the College Football Playoffs even more exciting, here’s a proposed schedule:  One that will satisfy the usual behemoth participants and add flavor to the expression “We’ll play anyone anywhere anytime…”

First Round:

Alabama plays Marshall (7-0)
Clemson plays Coastal Carolina (8-0)
Ohio State plays Cincinnati (8-0)
Notre Dame plays BYU (9-0)

Winners move on to semi-finals…

Fun!

UPDATE ON JJ —

He’s still a dominate player in the NFL and J.J. Watt also continues to make a difference off the field.

The 2010 Lott IMPACT Trophy winner from Wisconsin, Watt intercepted a pass and ran 19 yards for a touchdown just last weekend.

Widely known and respected for his inordinate amount of charity work, Watt heads the Justin J Watt Foundation, which has donated more than $5 million worth of equipment to 6th to 8th graders for after-school athletic programs.  The three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year was also instrumental in raising $37 million for Hurricane Harvey relief in 2016.  That, in part, earned hm Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year recognition.

The 31-year-old Watt was also married this past off-season to professional soccer player Kealia Ohai.

His foundation’s stated mission: Dream Big – Work Hard. For sure.

Names in the news:

Jaret Patterson of Buffalo ran for 409 yards and EIGHT touchdowns

Saturday…Sarah Fuller became the first woman to participate in a Power 5 Conference game when she handled the kickoff duties for Vanderbilt

Saturday…Arkansas star linebacker Bumper Pool, who is on the Watch List for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, confirmed that is his given name.

Jordan Fuller was not the top Ohio State Buckeye in this year’s NFL Draft.

Jordan Fuller was not the top Ohio State Buckeye in this year’s NFL Draft.

That was Chase Young, the defensive end, picked No. 2 overall.  Two other Buckeyes went in the first round and seven total were chosen before Fuller’s name was called in Round 6!

But Fuller, a Lott IMPACT Trophy finalist last year, became the biggest star of them all Monday night.  Now a starting safety for the L.A. Rams, Fuller intercepted two passes from Tom Brady on Monday Night Football to help the Rams to a significant road victory over Tampa Bay.

Fuller’s mother Cindy Mizelle is a professional singer who has performed with Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston and the Rolling Stones, among others. She attended last year’s awards banquet with Jordan.

Fuller was not the only Lott IMPACT Trophy finalist with a pair of interceptions in the NFL last weekend – Minkah Fitzpatrick, a 2017 finalist from Alabama, had two interceptions for the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers.

And back at Ohio State, current Buckeye standout Shaun Wade intercepted a pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown against upstart Indiana.  Wade is on this year’s Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List. Maybe he, too, can be an NFL Monday Night star like Jordan Fuller. The sixth rounder!

A trio of players on the Watch List – Mike Rose of Iowa State, Richie Grant of Central Florida and Richard LeCounte of Georgia – have three interceptions this year, among the leaders in the nation.
