IRVINE—The 8th annual California Showcase, a free tryout camp for high school student-athletes, will be held at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine on Feb. 22.

The unique tryout has enabled 900 student-athletes to receive $28 million in financial aid since 2013.

Run by former UCLA Coach Terry Donahue in conjunction with the National Football Foundation and the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl, the concept is to invite high school football players who have not received a scholarship to exhibit their skills to dozens of Division II, Division III and NAIA coaches.

And for the first time this year, junior college athletes who have completed their eligibility, are invited to attend and try out.

“Opportunity Through Football” is the slogan for the Showcase.

“Opportunity is one of the most precious gifts of life,” says Coach Donahue.  “How we respond when it is given to us and how often we can provide it to others can define our lives.”

The event is free and annually draws between 400 and 500 participants.

The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl is providing free transportation to and from the event.  Once the player is registered, he will be contacted regarding the free transportation.

The Showcase will be organized and managed by quality football coaches hand selected by Coach Donahue. Players will showcase their skills during a series of tests and drills that will best display each player’s talent at their respective positions. Following the activities, players and colleges/universities will meet to discuss scholarship and financial aid opportunities for the participating athletes.

Student athletes from across California can register online prior to the Showcase. They must be a graduating high school senior and have not accepted a scholarship offer from a Division I football program. In addition, they must meet one of the three following qualifications:

  • Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Have an SAT score of 920(math and critical reading only)
  • Have an ACT of 17 or higher

All Division II, III, and NAIA athletic directors and head football coaches are invited to attend. There will be ample time for coaches to view the athletes in drills and to talk to them individually about their respective football programs. Staff from the admissions and financial aid departments are encouraged to attend as well.
