OFF THE FIELD
Vernon Hargreaves III is a sophomore cornerback for the University of Florida Gators. As a freshman he made a big impact at the University gaining him a lot of attention both on-field and off-field. When Hargreaves is not working hard on the field he is participating in various community service projects with his fellow teammates. He participates in Gator literacy, where he visits local schools and reads to children during their class time. Stephen Foster Intramurals allows him to use his football talents to play football with children at Stephen Foster Elementary. He and his teammates participate in Gator Club, which allows them to visit pediatric patients at the Shands Medical Plaza, as well as Gator Tracks that let them give new sneakers to children in need. Hargreaves partakes in B.L.A.Q.U.E. (Bold Leaders, Achieving Quality, Unity and Excellence) that partners with the Gator football team to affect change in at-risk black youth. He also contributes to Kids Kicking Cancer where children battling serious illnesses and chronic pain come on campus, and show the Gator Football players how they use martial arts to combat pain, fear, and stress. After that they spend some time playing catch with the players and touring their locker room. Hargreaves demonstrates an excellent responsibility to the community engagement; as a Tampa native he stays involved in his surrounding communities.
ON THE FIELD
During his first year at the University of Florida he made a major impact on the field during the season. When Vernon enrolled in the summer he quickly moved up the depth chart, starting the final 10 games of the season at cornerback. His eleven pass breakups equaled the most by a true freshmen in school history. He gained a lot of media attention and received multiple honors for his performance his freshman year. Hargreaves made the Freshman All – SEC Team, and was named National Defensive Freshman of the Year by College Football News. Associated Press made him a Third Team All-American, while College Football News, Sporting News, FWAA (Football Writers Association of America), 247Sports, and Athlon Sports assigned him to First Team All – Freshman All – America. He was ranked second in the SEC for passes defended and named SEC Newcomer of the Year by Athlon Sports. Now in his second season with the Gators, Hargreaves has accumulated many preseason honors from not only the Lott Impact Trophy, but also the Nagurski, Bednarik, Water Camp Award, and the Jim Thorpe Award. He was also placed on the All – SEC First Team by Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, Lindy’s Sports, and College Sports Madness. He was positioned on the All – American First Team by Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, College Sports Madness, and Associated Press. Hargreaves was also named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by Lindy’s Sports. Going into his second year at the University of Florida Hargreaves is expected to continue to excel on and off the field.
