Safety Michael Caputo has climbed into leadership role

Not long after the close of spring ball in April, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst met with each player on the roster.

Chryst asked each player to list the top three leaders on the team, the three players who had earned their respect and the three best players.

One name made at least one category on every ballot:

Caputo.

“Have done this before,” Chryst said. “And you always get a little bit of insight to your team. And for the first time ever in doing this, Mike Caputo (was) on every player’s sheet…in all three columns.”

Chryst’s last season as an assistant at UW was Caputo’s redshirt season. Caputo’s rise from a member of the scout team in 2011 to a team captain in 2015 has been like his play — more steady than spectacular but critical nonetheless.
