Notre Dame Linebacker Jaylon Smith has been named the Lott IMPACT Player of the Week.

The 6-2, 230-pound sophomore led the Irish with 10 tackles (one for a loss) in a stunning 31-0 shutout victory over Michigan Saturday. It was the first time Notre Dame had ever held Michigan scoreless in the 126-year history of the rivalry. Michigan gained only 289 yards and less than three yards per rush.

Smith, the No. 1 high school linebacker recruit in the country when he entered Notre Dame, has lofty goals. “I want to be better than Manti,” he said this summer, referring to former Irish All-American Manti Te’o, the 2013 Lott IMPACT Trophy winner.

The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation will make a donation of $1,000 to the general scholarship fund at Notre Dame to recognize Smith’s performance.

Smith is on the Watch List for the annual Lott IMPACT Trophy, which will be presented Dec. 8 in Newport Beach, Ca. The Lott award is the only major college award based on character. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics and Tenacity.
