“IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT, THE MIND CAN ACHIEVE IT.”
Inaugural IMPACT Leadership Academy
- Updated: October 20, 2014
Saturday October 11th marked the inaugural IMPACT Leadership Academy hosted at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach, CA. The IMPACT Leadership Academy (ILA) was created by the Lott IMPACT Trophy and the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation to recognize and develop outstanding young leaders in the community.
Students who attended the ILA were chosen by a teacher or principal as someone who possesses leadership skills in the classroom and strives for all around achievement. The morning began with opening remarks from Myrtice Rowe from the Orange County Board of Education, followed by a presentation from featured speaker Dr. Casey Cooper. Following opening remarks, the students were introduced to three leadership workshops facilitated by members of the Pacific Club Board of Directors and local business leaders.
The ILA workshops featured group exercises on 1) How to make an impact during a job interview, including mock interviews among their peers. 2) Understanding the roles, processes and decorum during a Board Meeting. 3) Conducting a leaderless exercise which allowed students to work together and collectively find a solution.
“The IMPACT Leadership Academy truly had a powerful “IMPACT” on my 8th grade AVID students. Many of my students had not recognized their leadership potential, yet after the workshop, they walked away feeling taller, braver, and more confident about themselves and their potential. They truly enjoyed all the activities, especially the board room experience where they were able to voice their opinion and be validated. My students also mentioned how before the day, they believed that being a leader meant leading alone and telling people what to do. Now, they understand that leadership means encouraging people to work together toward a common goal. My students returned very excited about the program, the people they met, the food, and the “fancy” location! Thank you, IMPACT, for changing lives.” Said Lori Polydoros, 8th Grade Teacher – Lathrop Intermediate, Santa Ana Unified School District.
The next IMPACT Leadership Academy Workshops will take place Saturday, January 24th, 2015 and will host students from the following Orange County Districts: Capo-Laguna Zone: Laguna Beach, Capistrano, Saddleback Valley and Irvine Unified School.
