CALIFORNIA SHOWCASE RAISES OVER $18 MILLION IN FINANCIAL AID

The California Showcase, a free tryout for high school football players, has now surpassed the $18 million mark in financial aid to student-athletes who will continue their football career and their education in colleges across the country.

In five years, the Showcase has provided opportunities for 670 young men to attend college thanks to financial aid packages.

“We’re thrilled with the program and the results have been more than gratifying,” said Terry Donahue, the former UCLA head coach who runs the camp each February. And along with the National Football Foundation is responsible for all aspects of the Showcase.

“This past year (2017) we were able to help over 35% (35.8%) of those who attended, our highest percentage to date,” said Donahue.

Coach Donahue and the National Football Foundation believe that the opportunity of playing college football while earning a college degree has a profound effect on changing young peoples’ lives.

Division II, Division III and NAIA coaches from 20 different states sent coaches to the Showcase along with 14 junior colleges based in California.

The one-day tryout is held at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine and is staffed with nearly 100 volunteers, including many former coaches and players who put the hopeful candidates through various drills.

The Showcase is free to high school students who meet one of three requirements: a GPA of 2.5 or higher, an ACT score of 16 or higher, or an SAT score of 860 in math and critical reading.

In its five years coaches from 130 colleges have attended and over 2,500 athletes have tried out.

The Lott IMPACT Trophy is among the sponsors of the event and has been for all five years.

The 6th annual California Showcase will be held Feb. 24, 2018. For information and registration go to Cashowcase.org.
